New Holiday Fun Coming to Disney Hollywood Studios, 2017!

With all the construction and flurry of activity going on at Disney Hollywood Studios this year, they will be turning things into a flurry of fun for the holidays. While they will still have the Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam fireworks and projection show, there will be some fun additions to the park to replace the Osborne Lights.

There will be a new Seasons Greetings show! This projection show will be set on a snowy Sunset Blvd and will feature some iconic characters sharing love for the season. During the show, the Hollywood Tower Hotel will magically transform and bring the characters’ stories to life.

Some Disney character moments will include:

  • Mickey and Minnie reminiscing about a hometown Christmas as the scene shifts into a romanticized, Norman Rockwell-inspired town. This will begin in black and white before morphing into color.
  • The Toy Story characters guessing which new toys are coming this Christmas as the scene is covered in holiday wrapping paper.
  • The Muppets’ Swedish Chef will be babbling his own language while the scene turns into giant gingerbread houses.
  • Olaf will be pining over his holiday wish as the scene freezes over into a Frozen winter wonderland. This scene will have Aurora Borealis style lights and projected falling snow.

The show will run continuously each evening from November 9 to December 31 2017.

There will be added decor around the newly refurbished Echo Lake (they are draining the lake and painting, etc, through October this year.). Extra-large ornaments, colorful garlands and a giant Christmas tree centered on the water will make Echo Lake one of the most festive locations in the park this holiday season. Dinosaur Gertie will also don her Santa hat.

The fun continues inside the Frozen Sing a Long Celebration! For a limited time, all new songs from Disney’s new animated short “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure” will be added to the show while there will be an appearance from Olaf himself.

Don’t miss the holiday fun at DHS, and if you are one of our MHA clients, we can even book you and yours special character dining experiences or a dessert party that enables you to have a reserved viewing area for the Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam show.

Farewell, Great Movie Ride- and Hello to Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

By Rhonda Moffit, Moffits-Mad Hatter Adventures  July 31, 2017

We have been hearing rumors since 2016 that The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was going to be replaced. It was at the D23 Expo this year that the surprise announcement was made- the last day for the iconic attraction will be August 13th, 2017.

Everyone was surprised, as this means that there will be only four attractions operating until the new Toy Story Land opens next year at DHS. Shocked as we were, it was interesting to see what will replace the classic ride.

This will be the first time Disney has ever featured Mickey Mouse as the star in his own attraction. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be inspired heavily from the same shorts that are shown on the Disney Channel. It will have Mickey, Minnie, and a starring line up of their other famous pals.

The attraction will have a simple setup, as it will allow guests to step through a movie screen and join the cast of Disney favorites as an adventure progresses, making you the star of your own Mickey Mouse short. They say anything could happen and that it will be a zany, out of control adventure with twists, turns, and more surprises.

One of the things we find most interesting about the new attraction is the promise that it will have amazing and dazzling visual effects- without 3 D glasses. The new enhanced screen technology is being referred to as 2 1/2 D. Kevin Rafferty, Imagineer, presented information to us within the D23 panel and stated that teams are inventing new technologies that turn the regular flat world of colorful cartoons into a dimensional display of “amazingness”. We were then presented with a clip of a forest being transformed instantly to a cityscape, which you can see HERE.

The new attraction will feature an all original story and an original song. The pre-show will feature Mickey and Minnie getting prepared for a picnic while Goofy attempts to be an engineer. Riders will then board their vehicle, and be pulled through the movie screen into the adventure. Be prepared to seek hidden Mickey’s during this experience, as the attraction will have the largest amount of them placed in any attraction, ever.

There is a lot of controversy about this project, as The Great Movie Ride has been one of the favorite attractions at DHS for a long time- since opening day. Some Disney fans commented to us that they were very sad that Disney will not be updating the ride instead of changing it, and that it could be done with a larger variety of classic and modern film memorabilia. The Great Movie Ride is the last original attraction remaining from that historic opening day of DHS. When it closes in just a few days, it will be the end of an era.

Meet and Greet Fun: Yes, Baby Groot Really is THAT Cute…Our Disney Hollywood Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Adventure

Hey Star-Lord- we’re from Missouri, too!”

We love doing the Disney character meet and greets. It is always such fun to see which character is awaiting us after a brief stint in a queue. On this particular occasion, we decided to have some adventure and do the Guardians of the Galaxy meet and greet with Peter Quill (Star Lord) and the infamous Baby Groot.

After having a chat with Peter Quill when he asked us what music we would recommend he add to his recently acquired Zune (I suggested some Def Leppard- I am an eighties rock kind of gal), he introduced us to Baby Groot. Baby Groot approved of us assisting in the reparations of the ship and spoke in true Groot fashion. I was smitten. I confess, I now have the Baby Groot cup sitting on my desk because after all- I am Groot.
